At Soundability Studios, we are passionate about our students learning to play music that they love and therefore fostering a lifelong love of music.  

Karen Faye Shepherd

  • Owner and Director of Soundability Studios

‚ÄčKaren Faye graduated from the Faculty of Music at Memorial University of Newfoundland as a theory/composition major with piano as her principal instrument in the year 2000. Upon graduation, she moved to Amsterdam for three years where she studied international business at HogeSchool Voor Economische and sang as a lounge singer at a local restaurant club.  Upon returning to St. John's, Karen completed her Bachelor of Music Education at Memorial, which led to her moving to Calgary in 2005.  

Soundability Studios was first opened in 2006 under the name Vivace Musical Education Studios. Since the Italian term "Vivace" was not easily pronounced by some, she changed it to Soundability Studios in 2008 and has been passionately teaching many instruments to people of all ages ever since. Karen Faye also has since directed the music program at Banbury Crossroads School for two years, a small, innovative school build on the philosophy of self-directed education.

Karen Faye, the mother of a beautiful daughter and wife of a law student, enjoys listening to, creating and playing all kinds of music, building instruments, drawing, painting, writing, collecting vinyl and reading.  

Jennifer Ratzlaff

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama with Distinction

  • Educational Assistant Certificate with Honours


Jennifer Ratzlaff is excited to join Soundability Studios teaching introductory music and drama workshops. Jennifer is passionate about children’s education especially around fine arts, and for 20 years she has been running the children’s music programs and co-running the children’s drama production at the church she attends.  Jennifer has developed and run a readers’ theater club at Mackenzie Towne School, and has volunteered extensively helping teachers with reading and math clubs.

Jennifer has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama with Distinction from the University of Calgary, and loves all aspects of theater production from acting to directing to design.  Prior to joining Soundability Studios Jennifer has worked as Technical Director and designer for Fire Exit Theatre, and as a designer and stage manager for many theatre companies in Calgary including NWSC, Ground Zero, and Pleiades Theatre (now Vertigo). In 2016 Jennifer was nominated for a Calgary Theatre Critics’ Award for her design of Shadowlands (Fire Exit Theatre).

In addition to her extensive work in the fine arts, .Jennifer is a loving wife and mother of two girls who also enjoys crafting and baking. 

Sophie Schneider

  • Student at Mount Royal University

  • Piano, Voice and Oboe Teacher


Sophie has a passion for helping others learn. She began her music education in 2006 with vocal lesson, then followed with piano lessons in 2008. Her journey playing oboe began the summer of 2009 and continued with lessons from local professionals throughout high school. From 2013 – 2016, Sophie was involved with many musical ensembles including concert band, jazz big band, jazz combo, choir and vocal quartet.

Sharing music with others has been something that Sophie has enjoyed throughout her life. She began teaching with Soundability Studios in 2015, and has continued to work with young students to help them start their musical journey. Currently, Sophie is a student at Mount Royal University. She loves playing music to unwind and discovering new vinyl to listen to.

Emily Slaney

  • Diploma in Contemporary Music and Technology from Selkirk College, Voice Major

  • Voice Teacher, Introductory Piano and Ukulele Teacher


At age 7, Emily started studying classical voice. She attended the Performing Arts program at Central Memorial High School, sang in the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and two choirs who competed on an international level in England, Banff and Whistler.  

 

In College, Emily broke away from her classical upbringing and studied contemporary music. This included learning to sing in styles such as Jazz, R&B, and Pop Genres, as well as Latin, Gospel, Motown and Neo-Soul. Emily loves writing songs and arranged two of her own songs for her graduating showcase. In April 2017, she convocated with a Diploma in Vocal Performance from Selkirk College in Nelson, BC.

Emily is currently a full time music teacher in a private school in northwest Calgary.

 

Emily has been teaching with Soundability Studios since 2017 and is excited to continue her music teaching career by sharing her musical passions with her students!  

Lyric Paul

Student Teacher


- Grade 8 Piano from The Royal Conservatory of Music
- Piano and Theory Teacher (Beginner Level )

Lyric is a student teacher with Soundability Studios. She is currently working towards her grade 8 piano exam with the Royal Conservatory of Music and loves working with her students.

Lyric has a passion for music, martial arts, animals and being outside. She is also a world traveler and has been to six of the seven continents! Some of her favorite places are Kenya, Tanzania and Vietnam. She is learning to be a great piano teacher and sharing her love of music with her students!
