October Pre-School Sessions

Hallowe’en has passed, but in pre-school we spent the month of October marching on towards it! Each week we started with the song “Five Little Pumpkins”; we learned about unison (singing together) and solo (singing alone) as each child took a turn singing solo on the lines of the pumpkins in the song! We also learned about forte (loud) for the wind, and piano (soft) for the pumpkins rolling away. We also introduce my friends the Ti-ti twins (eight notes); when we combined Ta and the Ti-Ti twins we were able to clap the rhythm for the Five Little Pumpkins, which we then learned to play on the metallophones (the first two lines at least!). Our Classical Music section introduced the children to Beethoven’s Turkish March, but with our lyrics the children will recognize the title as Halloween March! At each day-home we wrote out own lyrics for the middle section incorporating any of our costumes that were Ti-Ti words. On our last session of October we also incorporated some choral speaking as we read through My favourite Halloween book, The Runaway Pumpkin (by Kevin Lewis). I hope that everyone had a Super and Spookity Halloween! Looking forward into November we will be embarking on a 6 week journey based around the music of The Nutcracker Suite, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. In the meantime please find the October lyrics below!

Five Little Pumpkins

Five little pumpkins, sitting on a gate.

The first one said, “Oh my it’s getting late!”

The second one said, “There’s witches in the air!”

The third one said, “But we don’t care!”

The fourth one said, “I’m ready for some fun!”

The fifth one said, “Let’s run, and run, and run!!”

WHOO-OOOO went the wind and out when the lights,

and the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight…

Halloween! It’s Halloween! We’ll march and have some fun on Halloween!

Halloween! It’s Halloween! We’ll have some fun on Halloween!

Jack-o-lanterns, flying bats, people wearing silly hats!

Halloween! It’s Halloween! We’ll march along to Halloween!
